People's Choice - Economic Opportunity - AmeriCorps: Rebuilding Together CapacityCorps MLK Week
WINNER: Service Impact Award
Members of the Rebuilding Together AmeriCorps program, CapacityCorps, dedicated the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service to rebuilding homes and revitalizing communities in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
In honor of the 2013 Martin Luther King Day of Service, 62 AmeriCorps members serving with Rebuilding Together came together from 20 different states to perform critical home repair services for veteran and senior citizen homeowners in-need. Rebuilding Together AmeriCorps members, serving a collective 3,000 hours, repaired nine homes with the help of area high school students and community members, in the Carverdale-Edwards-South Creston Hills (The C-E-C triangle) area in Oklahoma City.
The event was hosted by Rebuilding Together Oklahoma City (OKC), an organization that works year round to deliver free home repair services to local families in need of assistance. Madeline Whitehorn is a Rebuilding Together AmeriCorps Member serving with Rebuilding Together OKC and a lifelong resident of Oklahoma. She put together this project to assist this historically underserved community with the help of her fellow AmeriCorps Members. The Members also participated in evening discussions about the legacy of Dr. King and how service is just important now as it was during the Civil Rights struggle of the 1960’s.
Thanks to the great work of Rebuilding Together OKC, the project was featured on all local newscasts and several publications including The Oklahoman and USA Today. Here is one story that illustrates the impact of service and how the AmeriCorps Members assisted one veteran and his family: http://kfor.com/2013/01/21/service-day-rebuilding-together-honors-mlk/

I was fortunate enough to be a part of this amazing Day (and week!) of service and absolutely love being a member of CapacityCorps. This is as real as it gets, and no one says it better than Nic.
Please vote. You'll be showing support not only for us, but for low-income homeowners across the country.

Although I was much older than a lot of my cohorts, I learned so much and will never forget the experience and the feeling of doing something that will forever make another person's life better.
CapacityCorps member's are not just making a homeowner's life better but we make communities better.
